Adding A Collection
At CaveHistory.com the focus is to document the history of the early commercial cave era, primarily in Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee. 100 years from now, historians will still be studying and interpreting the events and relationships between mankind and caves. If a legacy is too be created that allows future amateur historians and collectors to actually understand the past, a digital archive needs to be created.
Some of the best materials documenting the history of caves comes in the form of paper advertisements. Such items were manufactured as cheaply as possible and is therefore prone to deteriorate and eventually crumble to pieces. Digitizing is the only solution that ensures it's longevity and the ability to be viewed without further damage to the originals.
Unlike a traditional museum, items viewed in a digital history archive will not be damaged with each viewing or handling. In digital form, both collectors and historians (amateur or otherwise), educators and researchers can enjoy increased access for additional interpretation.
Access, privilege and copyright issues are key areas for this private collections section. Such issues need to be confronted and mechanisms put in place to ensure confidentiality. A secured web collection also makes for a convenient way to share your items with individuals of your choice. Contact CaveHistory.com webmaster with additional questions.
